Redact PII on the client before it leaves the browser

Control what personal data the extension masks, so sensitive text never leaves the browser in a bug report.

When you capture a bug, the extension records the DOM, your inputs, and network traffic. Some of that can hold personal data: names, emails, card numbers. BugMojo handles this by masking sensitive content in the browser, before a report is ever uploaded. This page shows what is masked by default and how to adjust the rules for your app.

What gets masked

Out of the box, capture masks the content that most often carries personal data, so you are covered before you change any setting:

  • Input values: text you type into fields is replaced with placeholder characters, so passwords, emails, and card numbers are never recorded as typed.
  • Password fields: always masked and never sent in the clear.
  • Authorization headers: bearer and basic auth values are masked at capture time.

Screenshots capture what is on screen, so review and annotate them before you share. Network request and response bodies are never captured. Only the URL, method, status, and timing are recorded. See what BugMojo cannot capture for the full picture.

Tune redaction for the widget from the dashboard

The extension masks inputs, password fields, and auth headers by default and requires no configuration. For the embeddable widget/SDK, an owner or admin can tighten the policy per board from the dashboard. This is where CSS-selector tuning and the organization floor live.

Configure the widget redaction policy

  1. Open your project’s Widget settings in the BugMojo dashboard and find the Redaction section.

  2. Confirm Mask all inputs is on. It is enabled by default.

  3. To mask extra elements, set a Mask selector (for example, .customer-name or [data-pii]). Matching elements are masked in the replay.

  4. To fully drop an element and its children from capture, set a Block selector instead of masking it.

  5. Choose which PII categories (email, phone, card, and more) are scrubbed from console and network strings.

  6. Save, then capture a test report and open its replay to confirm the right content is masked before you rely on the rules. All of these apply in the browser, before anything is uploaded.

Common questions

Where does redaction actually happen?

Inside the extension, in the browser, before any capture is sent. BugMojo's servers never receive the raw text you mask. It is replaced with placeholder characters at the source.

Is masking on by default, or do I have to turn it on?

On by default. Input values, password fields, and authorization headers are masked out of the box, so you are protected before you configure anything. For the widget, you can tighten coverage further from the dashboard.

Can I add custom masking rules?

Yes, for the widget. Owners and admins can set mask and block CSS selectors and choose which PII categories to scrub from the dashboard, plus an organization redaction floor that boards can only make stricter.
